Position Summary

The role of the English Subject Expert Teacher (SET) is to ensure the day-to-day exceptional education of students by preparing and facilitating subject specific lesson plans. Subject Expert Teachers implement the established BASIS Curriculum while tailoring specific topics to integrate their knowledge and passion for the subject.

SPANISH 1 COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a first-year Spanish course with equal emphasis on the three major modes of communication: interpretive (reading and listening), interpersonal (writing and speaking), and presentational (writing and speaking). Students will acquire knowledge in Spanish by continually increasing their vocabulary, grammar, and use of idiomatic expressions. Students will learn to write short sentences in the present tense on various topics. Students will describe, ask and answer questions, engage in simple conversations, and carry out simple realistic functions to communicate in the target language.

SPANISH 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course builds on Spanish skills developed the previous year. Students will continue to acquire mastery of the four basic skills of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They will continue to expand knowledge acquired by increasing their vocabulary, grammar, and use of idiomatic expressions. Aspects of Hispanic cultures will be explored by learning geography, culture, and history of the Spanish-speaking countries. Students will explore a variety of authentic resources from Spanish-speaking cultures and current events such as literary works, audio recordings, video clips from Spanish-speaking movies and television, songs, and news and magazine articles. Participation in conversational activities will be required.

SPANISH 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In this course, students will improve their Spanish language skills. This class will be taught entirely in Spanish and encourage students to use the Spanish language at all times while in the class and with all classroom related activities. On a daily basis students will work with a variety of authentic materials and perform authentic tasks in the language which are intended to prepare them for further language studies and the AP Spanish Language & Culture course, should they choose to enroll in it.

LINGUISTICS COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course, students will learn linguistics, or the scientific study of language. Linguists use the scientific method to discover the underlying structure of language, similarities and differences between the world’s languages, and how language is created and processed by the human mind. Throughout the span of the course, students will investigate the structure of several world languages; however, the course will give particular emphasis to Mandarin, Latin, Spanish, and French preparing students to choose a foreign language in 8th grade. In each unit, students will use data from these languages to investigate a different subdomain of linguistics. Thus, this course will build a strong foundational understanding of language, not only of English but foreign languages as well, making students better prepared for foreign language study the following year.
